Now for the contest!

“Red over Black” is one of our most popular finishes–it’s high time we had a better name for it!  The most time consuming finish we do, “Red over Black” requires an 11 step finishing process involving two different shades of red and, of course, black.  You are invited to give a name to this lovely finish and compete for a prize.  The winner and the winning name will be announced on our blog July 15th and the author will receive a “Red over Black” wall pocket–the shipping is on us (twigs not included)!

(A note on the color difference between the wall pocket and the console: because the pocket is made of several slats, the sanding in our finishing process brings out more of the black in the finish than it would on a larger piece of furniture, thus resulting in a darker looking finish).

To enter:

Simply email your entry with the subject line, “Red over Black Contest” to colonialwoodwrights@hotmail.com by midnight, Tuesday, July 10.  The winner will be contacted via email and shipping arranged.  We look forward to benefiting from your creativity!

Spotlight: The Farmhouse Dry Sink

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

SOLD!

Introducing our first ever Monthly Spotlight piece: The Farmhouse Dry Sink!

Before homes had indoor plumbing, “dry sinks” were an indispensable piece of kitchen furniture.  The top area was a place to hold large bowls or basins of water while to lower shelves, cabinets or drawers provided storage space, or perhaps served as a pie-safe.   Today, The Farmhouse Dry Sink has many contemporary applications.  Designed and perfectly detailed to serve as an entertainment center, a wine bar or a baby changing table, this unique, heirloom-quality piece of furniture can find a home in any room…or move from room to room as your family grows or your needs change.

Made from new and reclaimed pine, The Farmhouse Dry Sink features:

  • Our historic heirloom fern green-over-black layered paint finish
  • Two doors fitted with old metal screen (re-purposed from an old, mid-western screened porch)
  • Four adjustable shelves
  • Five drawers with knobs fashioned from reclaimed chair turnings
  • Tall storage space with plank door and wrought iron ring pull
  • Top right features a flip lid cubby for storage
  • Top left features a small drawer

Additionally, The Farmhouse Dry Sink comes with:

  • Six slatted adjustable shelves for wine bottles so the bottles won’t roll
  • Two adjustable shelves for DVDs

 Overall size:
  • 50″ wide
  • 40 1/2″ high
  • 18″ deep
  • Top surface space is 38 1/2″ wide, made from reclaimed wood and will hold up to a 42″ diagonal T.V. or a standard changing pad

Price $695, not including shipping or delivery  SOLD!

With so many possibilities, the only question remaining is how will you use The Farmhouse Dry Sink?

In consideration of our online friends and followers, this beautiful, versatile piece is available exclusively through this blog until the first weekend of March.  On Saturday, March 3rd The Farmhouse Dry Sink will make its way to our room in Chocolate Soup and be made available to the general public.   If you are seriously interested in this piece, act quickly and contact us at 209-742-6624.
* Please also note that many of the pictured accessories (hot air balloons, shelves, lamps, candle pillars) are available in our room at Chocolate Soup.  Natalie, however, is not. *

Introducing: The Monthly Spotlight

Think of it as a once-a-month, online “release” party.  Every month we will craft a particularly unique piece of furniture–something really special.  Perhaps it will feature reclaimed wood or salvaged hardware, or a new finish, or metal work.  Perhaps it will be a corner desk, or a utility stand, or a quirky little hall table, or a chest of drawers.  Perhaps it will be something like this:

Once a pile of old pallet wood…

Now a changing table for our grandson, Jacob:

(And when Jacob outgrows it, our daughter can use it as a dry sink–what a lovely two-in-one design!).

Perhaps one of the monthly Spotlights will be just the thing you’ve been looking for, or perhaps it will spark your imagination for a design you would like to commission.  Who knows?

The idea is to keep our creativity flowing, your interest piqued, and to provide a venue by which to give you the very first dibs on our latest work.  More, we hope the monthly Spotlight will give us a forum for showing and telling you more about the process of crafting a piece, from start to finish.  To that end, we hope to provide monthly “Spotlight Previews” when appropriate, possibly depicting the raw materials (could be a pile of old pallet wood, or scraps of select grade maple), or possibly giving you a glimpse at traditional methods of furniture making, such as hand planing or dove-tailing.  Most importantly, we hope this monthly Spotlight gives you a deep sense of the story behind our work, and behind the particular piece featured.

The nuts and bolts:

  • If you haven’t already done it, subscribe to our blog so that you receive an email alert when we publish a new post–and release a new, monthly Spotlight.
  • The spotlighting will begin in February, and subsequent Spotlights will be featured in the third week of each month–some time between the 15th and the 20th of every month.
  • We will note the dimensions and price of each piece.
  • What if you think you’d like to buy the piece?  Give us a call right away–209-742-6624–and we’ll make some arrangements.
  • Spotlight features that are not sold through contact with this blog will go to our room at Chocolate Soup or on the road with us to one of our many weekend, retail shows.

For now, watch closely–February is coming and so is the first Spotlight!
